restaining my wood deck next to the pool?
I need some really good, long lasting, water resistant stain for my deck. The condition is it should've been done like, last year or the year before bad. So technically I'd be restaining but you'd never guess it was done once, even though there are signs proving so. Everyone gets in and out of the pool from the deck so between the sun, bromine, water and kids, it needs a makeover , I'd just like some really good brand or type that lasts a few years if possible. Thanks:) P.S. The kids are waiting on your help, I told'em the pool will not be open until we stain! P.S.S. I will extend the time limit on my question until I conquer my mission.
Simple solution to a pain in the butt problem....
Ok.... since the pool is closed, and the kids are really wanting to jump in, heres what you gotta get....
Go to Lowes, I say Lowes since they have exactly what I've used, and it works.
Got yer pen handy? Get the following.
Stain
You pick the color you want. Read the label as to how much 1 gallon will cover.
Paint rollers get at least 3 to 6 of the cheap knap kind, and get two or three foam kind, paint tray, latex gloves, threaded broomstick, so you can attach the paint roller to it.
Thompsons Water Seal, 1 gallon will go a long way, trust me.
Varathane Outdoor Urethane (http://www.varathane.com/product.asp?frm_product_id=667&SBL=1) I swear by this stuff when doing any sorta outdoor refinishing project, especially surfaces that will be used, decking, gates, seating, etc...
Also, you'll find somethig called Anti-Slip additive, it can come in a can or bag. Its basically sand or crushed pumice, you mix it with the Urethane before you apply.
Ok, so first thing you wanna do is... READ THE LABELS!!!! Clean yer deck. All you seriously gotta do is hose it off with a decent nozzle. Let it dry for at least 24 hours. Then apply the stain with the paint roller (knap kind), work from the back, towards where you can exit, otherwise you paint yerself into a corner.
Let that dry, in the Sun, it can a few hours. Next, you wanna apply the Thompson's water seal. Apply it over the stain, two coats if you so desire. I did, but you gotta wait 24 hours between coats, and 24 to 48 hours after the final coat to apply the urethane.
Ok, now with finishing the surface....
READ THE LABELS. I say it because before you start, you'll be happy you did.
Apply the first coat of the Urethane, let this dry for a few hours or until it is dry to the touch, meaning no fingerprints, marks, etc.... Then you can apply the second coat, you can get by with two, if thats the case, then with the second coat, you stir in the Anti-Slip stuff. Making sure you mix it really really good. Then apply with the paint roller. Personally, since this is all outside, I'd do 3 coats, mixing the anti-slip in the 3rd coat.
Now, I dont know how big your deck is. But I would seriously plan on spening between $150 and $200 on this. The Urethane costs about $30 a gallon, and 1 gallon can take care of about 50 to 60 sq ft. As for stain, a $20 to $30 gallon can go about twice as far, 90 to 100 sq ft. It depends on how many coats you do, and how easily the wood soaks up the stain.
The real key here to keep in mind is TIME. Time between coats of stain, waterseal, urethane.... waiting about 1 day for each coat would be perfect, this gives each thing the proper time to fully cure and dry.
The problem with just staining, or applying water seal to the deck and not properly finishing it it is that the color turns gray in a couple years, looks like crap if you ask me. And the wood rots out much faster since the water seal you applied 5 or 10 years ago also dries out. If you take some time and spend a little extra $$ to finish the wood with a good quality outdoor urethane, your wood will last at least 20 years, and look for for at least 15 of them, unless of course you refinish it again.
Best of luck hon.
