Why wouldn't the electrons in the atoms of the gold foil affect the paths of the alpha particles?

This is from Rutherford's experiment.

Alpha particles are helium nucleus, therefore VERY small compared with an atom, and VERY massive compared with an electron (electron are 1836 times lighter than proton and neutron, so alpha particles are over 7000 times heavier than electron).

Also, electrons are not really "there" at a very specific place, they are like clouds, moving very fast. To summarize, electrons offer as much of an obstacle to alpha particle as a sheet of paper offers to a rifle bullet.
