Why does my grip improve when I wrap a piece of cloth around my hand?

This is in relation to a mechanical vice that I noticed can be tightened up much further when I have a cloth or rag around it compared to using a bare hand. I suspect it has something to do with surface area and friction.

your hand secrets oils and moisture so its harder to grip then when there is a dry cloth there. just like opening a tight jar
